PROGRAMS Paulhaven Camp - July 16-22, 2006 Morning Meditation Group - Starting Sunday, April 3 Who me, meditate? You bet! Learn to take a moment to find the “quiet centre” in your life. Join us for a quiet time of meditation. We will meet each Sunday morning in the Pastor’s Study where we’ll relax, do some winding down, practice “getting centred” in peacefulness and conclude with some sharing and a blessing. This will be a six week series starting Sunday, April 3rd and running to Sunday, May 6th, from 10:15 to 10:45am. Catherine Maine will be leading the group, so please contact her for more information, or if you wish to sign up for this group. Know Your Gospel - Bible Study, Thursday April 14, 21, 28, 7:30pm Yes, the “gospel train” has left the station (meaning that our study of the Gospel of Mark is now underway!) But this train makes stops for all seekers and believers. So come join us on our journey with Mark as we learn what the “good news” of Jesus is really all about. We’re finding it’s a great trip for the soul and you’ll see some amazing things about yourself you hadn’t known before. Catch the gospel train every Thursday at 7:30pm! Women’s Sacred Circle Dancing - Saturday, April 16, 2-4pm Women who participated in the monthly Sacred Circle Dance last month had a really great time. If you or a friend weren’t able to come, don’t miss out this time. The dance promotes physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It’s beautiful and it’s just plain fun! Come dance with others and get in touch with the Spirit within. Beginners are very welcome – no previous dance experience is necessary. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and bring a water bottle. For more information, please call Catherine Maine at 456-0507. Catherine has been a sacred circle dancer for ten years and a facilitator and teacher of the dance for six years. Seniors! It’s Another Jamboree!! - Saturday, April 16, 7:30pm Calling all seniors!! Randy Runka, our musical maestro, is organizing another “Jam”, a musical Jamboree, that is. Old time ballads, country music and ‘50’s classic rock tunes – you’ll hear’em all! Come out with your friends, even make some new ones, maybe “shake a leg” too. It’s all happening at the Jamboree in our Fellowship Hall, starting at 7:30pm. No admission charge but a donation for the hall rental would be appreciated. For more information, call Randy Runka at 973-5593. “Casablanca” - Movie Night, April 19, 6:30pm What is the source of this 1942 Academy Award-winning film’s enduring appeal? Widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made and perhaps the greatest ever to come out of Hollywood, “Casablanca” touches on all the timeless themes of human existence: love, courage, sacrifice and a higher purpose. Come watch Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid and Claude Rains give the performances of their careers in this tale of the saloon owner Rick who is redeemed by his love for the beautiful Ilsa. Hear Dooley Wilson sing those classic words, “It’s still the same old story, a fight for love and glory, a case of do or die, the world was made for lovers, as time goes by.” Oh yeah! It’s all happening at Armand and Agnes’ place at 6:30pm; bring your favourite munchie to share. Here’s looking at you, kid! Collective Kitchen - Starting Tuesday, April 19 Sometimes it seems to take a little longer for some things to get going: a car on a wintry morning, yourself before that first cup of coffee, etc. Well our new partners in the Community Services department of the city of Edmonton are finding the same thing with our joint monthly program called “Collective Kitchen”. Due to start last month, the community development workers have advised us that they are shooting for an April beginning instead. A reminder: Collective Kitchen is a program for single moms and others in our community whose financial resources aren’t enough to enable them to provide good, nutritious meals to their families on a consistent basis. It allows small groups of adults to meet together twice each month, initially with the support of a Community Services social worker. The first meeting is a planning meeting, where participants choose five recipes to cook for their families. They then go shopping for the ingredients (the cost of the groceries is assumed by Community Services). The next day they get together and cook the five meals, enough food to feed everyone in their families. The meals are taken home to be eaten and also frozen. Meals can then be reheated at the end of the month when the pantry is getting bare, or on busy days, when there is no time or energy to cook. There are presently a number of churches in our city offering a Collective Kitchen and it’s an important way that hunger and all the problems it brings – illness, stress at home, failure in school, etc. – are being addressed. We are very pleased to be hosting this program for neighbours in need in our community. If you or anyone you know could benefit from being part of the Collective Kitchen, please call Eva Marchand, City of Edmonton Community Services, at 496-5861. Bring A Friend Sunday - Sunday, May 1 What would happen if each of us brought at least one friend or family member to church – a whole lot more people in church, that’s what! More people with the chance to get to know us and share our church home with us. And if you know of a past member we haven’t seen for a while, give them a call. Sunday, May 1st is the day we’re going to do it. Let’s all fill the house of the Lord! Western Canada Conference - June 24, 25 & 26 Late-breaking news: we have recently heard that the president of our North American denomination, Christine Laitner, is planning to attend the Conference we’re hosting this year. Chris as she is universally known is both a “wise woman”, in the ancient, spiritual sense of that term, and a very dynamic leader of our church. We are delighted that she might be with us. We’re also very pleased to report that Rev. Ken Turley of COW (our denomination’s Committee On Worship) and his family will also be joining us. Ken is not only the pastor of the Fryeburg, Maine church but also a professional musician and composer. His wife Laurie is a singer and a music teacher. They will be collaborating with Lorrie Lipski and – we hope! – daughters Gloria and Gabrielle, plus other musical talents (hello, Crystal and Randy!) and of course Ken Hillaby. Together they will be putting on a music workshop, a Saturday night concert / dance and participating in our memorial and Sunday morning communion services. So whatever you do – don’t miss Conference this year!! Mark it on your calendar – it’s going to be an awesome musical and learning experience and a lot of fun. “KidsChurch!” Update for April Please remember that our Sunday School, “KidsChurch!”, now starts BEFORE church, from 10:15am to 10:45am. During this time parents are invited to relax, enjoy some quiet time, or perhaps join our new meditation group! Then, from 10:45am through to the end of the worship service, our teen volunteers will be supervising the children in Bible-related activities and crafts. This will allow parents, including our Sunday School staff, to be upstairs to enjoy the whole service without interruption. Now here are the children’s Bible lessons for April: Sunday, Apr. 3 Camp at Gilgal - Joshua 5 Sunday, Apr. 10 The Capture of Jericho - Joshua 6 Sunday, Apr. 17 Achan Does Wrong - Joshua 7, 8 Sunday, Apr. 24 The Gibeonites’ Trick - Joshua 9 |
